View Full Version : Road King transmission shifter problem

Today, while installing a new exhaust system on my '04 Road King and while looking over the bike, I discovered a large amount of slop in the shifter mechanism as it feeds back to the transmission. The verticle arm that attaches to the splined transmission shaft which is attached to the long rod running forward to the heel-toe shifter mechanism was loose. This arm is affixed to the shaft by way of an allen screw but on my verticle arm it is augured out and will bearly turn the shifter pawl assembly to shift up or down. If your still with me, the question is, does anyone know of a substitute "verticle arm" that could be substituted for the H-D original that would fit onto the transmission shaft (the problem with replacing this verticle arm is that you must take off the entire primary housing in order to remove the arm from the transmission shaft!). I'm speaking of a hand-made part probably, engineered and produced in small quantities to fix this particular problem which Harleys have had.

There is no better part on the market, just replace it with a new one and tighten it good and tight, I mean tight, but do not strip. The proper maintenance person should check and tighten this at normal service. It's a fine spline situation and should be tight new, but their not. If it's worn a lot it cannot be tightened, must be replaced.

I had the same problem with my '87 FLTC. The bolt that ran through the lever broke off in the lever, leaving some usable thread. Fortunately I caught it before it got worn too badly. I put a nut all the way to the head on an allen head bolt, ran the bolt in far as it would go (maybe 1/4") then tightened the nut down onto the lever. Been working for 65,000 plus miles.

It's impossible to "see" how much spline/lever wear there is down in there and I'm not savey to this new model stuff, but if you can thread a longer allen bolt into the lever, then tighten a nut down, you'll get 3-4 times the holding power of the original setup.

Hope this helps, ride safe!

Take the allen bolt out, rreplace with a new one(use loctite), push arm up against tranny and tighten. Done hunsreds that way. Trick is to replace the bolt. Trust me.
